Want to chat with other people in your local area? Interested in meeting new friends? Take advantage of the Frontier Chatterbox and chat live with others in your community. Listed below are the most current and popular Instant Messaging Programs available for download. If you would like to download one of these programs to your computer, please click on the download link. By clicking the download link you are going to be downloading the most recent release of the Messaging Program to your computer. A window should pop up asking you what would you like to do with the file. We recommend you choose to "Save" it. The most logical place to save the file would be to your Desktop. For more information on how to register or install each Instant Messaging Program, click on the link labeled "Tutorial". AOL Instant Messenger MSN Messenger ICQ Messenger Yahoo Messenger mIRC AIM Tutorial Click on the Download link and download AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) to your desktop. After the download is complete, double click on the new icon to install the program. After installation is complete, double click on the AIM icon to launch the program. If you already have an AIM Screen Name (this is not your Frontier username and is in no way associated with Frontier) enter it into the new window with your password and you are ready to chat! Click “Sign On” to begin. If you do not have a AIM Screen Name, click on the “Get a Screen Name” link to get one. This will take you to a sign up page with AIM and guide you through the Screen Name selection process. The Screen Name must be unique to AIM. There are millions of users already on AIM, so if your first Screen Name selection is already in use by someone else, keep trying. After your Screen Name is created, use it to Sign On to AIM. As soon as you sign on to AIM, you will see your buddy list. This list shows you the contacts with whom you can communicate and their status (whether they are online or offline). You can add “buddies” by click the Setup button at the bottom of this window. To send a message to one of your “buddies,” double click on their name, type your message, and click Send. Chat/Instant Messaging Links MSN Tutorial Click on the Download link and download MSN Messenger (MicroSoft Network Messenger) to your desktop. After the download is complete, double click on the new icon to install the program. After installation is complete, a MSN messenger window will appear. Click the button “Sign In.” If you already have an MSN .Passport Sign-In Name (this is not your Frontier username and is in no way associated with Frontier) enter it into the new window with your password and you are ready to chat! Click “OK” to begin. If you do not have a MSN .Passport Sign-In Name, click on the “Get One Here” link to get one. This will take you to a sign up page with MSN and guide you through the Registration process. The screen name must be unique to MSN. There are millions of users already on MSN, so if your first Sign-In Name is already in use by someone else, keep trying. After your Screen Name is created, use it to Sign In to MSN. As soon as you sign on to AIM, you will see your contact list. This list shows you the contacts with whom you can communicate and their status (whether they are online or offline). From here you can add a contact to your contact list, send an instant message, and much more. To add a contact, click on Add a Contact. To send a message to a contact, highlight the contact’s name by clicking on it with your mouse and then click the button This tutorial helps you install and use a few of the basic features of MSN messenger. Chat/Instant Messaging Links ICQ Tutorial Click on the Download link and download ICQ your desktop. After the download is complete, double click on the new icon to install the program. After installation is complete, an ICQ Registration window will appear. Choose “New User” or “Existing User.” Once you sign in (with a new or existing ICQ number) the main ICQ window will appear. To send an instant message to someone on your contact list, double click on their listing. To add people to your contact list, click on the Add button. The new screen will guide you through the process of adding someone to your contact list. The ICQ director is also available from here. This will help you find people with similar interests to you, send a message to a random user who is available, or send a message to a cellular phone. Chat/Instant Messaging Links Yahoo Messenger Tutorial Click on the install link and install Yahoo Messenger on your computer. After installation is complete, a Yahoo Messenger “Getting Started” window will appear. If you have a Yahoo Messenger ID (this is not your Frontier username and is in no way associated with Frontier) you can enter it into the Log In window. If you do not have a Yahoo ID, you can click the “Get a Yahoo ID” button. Once you sign in (with a new or existing Yahoo ID) the main Yahoo window will appear. To send an instant message to someone on your Yahoo contact list, double click on their listing. This is a basic tutorial on how to do the common things done with Yahoo Messenger. For more on using the advanced features of Yahoo Messenger, click on the Help menu on the contact window and choice click on Messenger Help. This will take you to Yahoo Messenger’s official help site. Chat/Instant Messaging Links mIRC Messenger Tutorial Click on the Download link and download mIRC to your desktop. (IRC stands for “Internet Relay Chat”) After the download is complete, double click on the new icon to install the program. After installation is complete, double click on the mIRC icon to launch the program. The first screen that appears will ask you for the server you want to connect to. IRC is different that other chat programs as it uses servers and “channels” (think “rooms”) other than individual messages. In other words, you join a “channel” and chat with the people in the “channel” instead of sending messages back and forth to one person. Once you have the server selected, type in your name, your e-mail address, a nickname and also an alternate nickname. You cannot have a unique username as you do with other services (like AIM or Yahoo Messenger), but as long as the name you select is not already active on the server you are on, you can choose whatever you like. After this information is entered, click the “Connect to IRC Server” button. Once connected successfully, a list of channels (or “rooms”) that are available on a server will appear in another window. Different chat rooms for many discussion topics exist on each server. All of these rooms are created and monitored by others using IRC around the world. While this is a prime example of the Internet offering “free speech” to the masses, be advised that you will encounter many different viewpoints, some that you may deem as offensive. To Join a room, select a channel listed by clicking your mouse on it and then click the button “Join.” That will take you into the chat room. Once the room window has appeared, you can enter text and strike the enter key on your keyboard. This will display your text in the window for the entire room to read. If you want to send a private message to a specific person in the room, double left click on their name in the list on the right side. That will open up a private conversation with that person. mIRC and the IRC network has many offerings well beyond the scope of this basic introduction tutorial.
